Announcing the digital edition of Modern Arnis The Filipino Art of Stick Fighting by Remy Presas!

Presas became a national figure in the Philippines for his blending of island fighting styles and elements of other martial arts into one system, which he named modern arnis. By 1970, in his mid-30s, Presas had become one of his country’s premier stick fighters, promoting the sport and regularly teaching it in physical education classes throughout the land. Presas traveled to the United States in 1975 on a government-sponsored good-will tour. His efforts in the U.S. resulted in his twice being awarded membership in the Black Belt Hall of Fame (1982 Instructor of the Year and 1984 Weapons Expert of the Year).

Presas taught his system of armed and unarmed self-defense to students of every ilk, including law officers, senior citizens and even movie stars. “Background doesn’t matter,” Presas said. “If you have the strength, you can participate.” And, unlike many martial arts, arnis doesn’t require years of training to gain competency. It is possible to learn the fundamentals of arnis in a 36-hour basic course. This classic instructional text pulls together many of those fundamentals—a variety of stretches and warm-ups, the 12 basic striking and defense systems of modern arnis, as well as stick- and sword-disarming methods, hand-to-hand combat (“trapping hands”) and so much more.

As a bonus, the digital edition of Modern Arnis includes five Black Belt magazine articles about Presas and the practice of this ancient combat system that’s been updated for today’s world. The digital version of Modern Arnis The Filipino Art of Stick Fighting is a must-have for practitioners of any martial art.

Modern Arnis The Filipino Art of Stick Fighting Digital Edition With Bonus Content eBook Remy Presas Reviews

Husband loves it.
Remy Presas has never been defeated by anyone. In actual life and death matches no sport karate but real life and death. Yes he has passed away but his fighting art lives on, and apples for apples still beats all other forms.
I never got it.
a total waste of money buying it and a total waste of time reading it. it was mostly just praises for the author (he passed away already RIP). as far as his teachings are concerned there is nothing realistic or practical methods, only very old re-hashed judo-karate stuff while holding a rattan stick. his methods are not even authentic Filipino. If you want to learn the real and practical Filipino martial arts, buy the book Eskrima by Krishna Godhania instead.
I've been using this as a supplement to my Arnis class and it's been really useful. The step-by-step pictures are very clear and helpful for me, since I'm not that great at kinesthetic learning. But it would be a confusing manual if you were trying to learn Arnis from this and this alone, without having a class to help you out, because obviously it can't provide all the details of each movement from a limited number of static pictures.

Side note--despite the fact that the pictures appear to be from the '70s, it was kind of nice that the text didn't incorrectly assume the reader (me) was necessarily male. Sometimes ladies like to hit things with sticks, too.
This is my 2nd in depth reading of Professr Presas' classic book on Modern Arnis. My first reading first occupied in 1983 when I became a student of Sifu Don Zanghi at the Fight Back Institute, in Buffalo, NY. Sufi Zanghi was teaching a combination of Modern Arnis and Tracy System Kenpo from a self defense orientation. Sifu Zanghi, recommended that his students get a copy of Professor's book and read it right along side his instructions at FBI.

This is an excellent book, it lays out the foundational skills that one needs to learn and master in terms of Modern Arnis. It's the blueprint that establishes the structure of the art and opens the doors that make all of the other things that Professor taught within the art accessible to his serious students.

In the short term, the Modern Arnis text is the quick and dirty basics of an extensive stand alone Filipino Martial Arts system. Over the longer term, Professor Presas' book sets the stage for an in depth study of a highly personalized approach to a highly effective and efficient self-defence system based on weapon utilization. The last five (5) articles in the digital edition of this classic book, expands on the original content of Modern Arnis as published by Professor. These articles allow the reader to see behind the scenes as it were into Professor Presas' approach and thinking with regard to his philosophy of Modern Arnis. A very significant idea of Professor's approach was that Modern Arnis was designed to be a self-defense art that utilized the single stick as the prelude to establishing an empty hand set of applications that could be used to defend ones self.

As Richard Zimmerman, pointed out in his 1977 article, "36-Hour Martial Art" Professor Presas used the single stick approach to establish both the offensive and defensive approaches of Modern Arnis, then he added the double stick work through Redondo, and the three (3) sinawali drills. And each drill had an empty hand defensive application attached to it. Mr. Zimmerman, also noted that Profesor Presas, believed that a student with some prior martial arts training could gain some proficiency in the Modern Arnis fundementals, to the point that they could begin teaching others in about 36 hours of classroom training.

I believe that the expanded digital edition of "Modern Arnis, The Filipipino Art of Stick Fighting" is an excellent reprinting of an iconic original training manual. It should be on the reading list of anyone and everyone interested in the FMA. It is a 5 star book!.
As a reference manual for beginning and even some intermediate Arnis/Kali/Escrima techniques developed by GM Remy Presas it's a must have for anyone wanting a reference and easy to understand guide. Good pictures depicting techniques all throughout the book.
